About Austin
The Circuit of the Americas was purpose-built for F1 and opened in 2012. Tilke's design borrows signature corners from around the world — the Turn 1 climb echoes Istanbul Park, the Esses reference Silverstone, and the high-speed middle sector nods to Suzuka. The result is one of the most drivable modern circuits, with elevation change adding a dimension that flat purpose-built tracks lack.
A torrential, multi-restart race ended with Lewis Hamilton passing Nico Rosberg at Turn 12 and clinching his third world championship — celebrated with a knee-slide on the grid.
Kimi Räikkönen took the lead off Hamilton at Turn 1 and held off Verstappen for the win — his first since 2013, the longest gap between victories in F1 history.
Both Hamilton and Leclerc were disqualified post-race for excessive plank wear after the bumpy COTA surface ate into their floors. Sainz inherited a podium; the FIA tightened pre-race compliance checks.
